What Maidstone actually runs on.
This is the county town, and that shapes its economy more than anything else does. Kent County Council and the borough council are both headquartered here, which supports a large public sector workforce and the professional services that gather around any seat of local government: solicitors, accountants, surveyors and consultancies, concentrated in and immediately around the centre. Retail is the other half of the town proper, anchored on Fremlin Walk and the Mall, with the hospital a major employer in its own right. Out along the Aylesford and Larkfield corridor the character changes completely into light industry, distribution and trade counters serving the whole of mid Kent. Ringing all of it are the commuter villages, Bearsted, Boxley, Detling, West Malling, Loose and Coxheath, which is where a good deal of the money actually lives and where most of the domestic work comes from.
